Case study

Ten days to same day.

Delta Wealth Advisors runs tax in-house for an Indianapolis wealth management practice. They dropped their offshore prep provider, ran 480 returns through Truss and Filed, and returns that used to sit for 10 days now come back the same morning.

We were using outsourcing the year before, and it's night and day difference. Incredible amounts of time. You'd get stuff back that was wrong. We had a really good year with just efficiencies.

The challenge

It came back late, and it came back wrong.

Delta Wealth Advisors is an Indianapolis wealth management firm that does its own tax work instead of handing clients off to a CPA down the street. Dino Efthimiou, co-founder and CEO, is one of the reviewers, and Chris Makin, CPA, runs the tax practice as Head of Tax. Between them the firm files 650 to 700 individual returns a year on top of the advisory work.

For years the prep went offshore, and the lateness was the bigger problem. Final documents would land in the office, and then nothing would happen with them for a week and a half.

"I'm used to final documents coming in and nobody touching the return for 10 days."

That cost never shows up on a timesheet, which is part of why it lasted so long. The client who just sent in a final K-1 is the same client sitting across the table in a planning meeting. Ten days of silence on the tax side is ten days you can't answer a question about their return.

The approach

Same morning, not ten days.

Delta Wealth moved prep to Filed for the 2026 season, with client intake through Truss and CCH Axcess staying as the tax software. Six weeks in, unprompted, Dino described what the volume felt like:

"When you can prepare a return as quickly as you can, it's just crazy."

The reviewers changed how they work too. Nobody at Delta Wealth opens a cold return. Before a person reviews, the file goes through the Filed AI Reviewer, so the points worth checking are already flagged and waiting. They ran it on 413 returns in their first season.

"Before it came through a human review on our side, we'd put it through Filed review, so that was ready for us when we jumped into review."

Dino watched the output improve as the season went: "the more recent returns that I've reviewed, I've not seen the same errors that I saw in the first couple."

I'm used to final documents coming in and nobody touching the return for 10 days. This person uploaded a final K-1 this morning, and it's already through prep.

The results

The numbers speak for themselves.

480

Returns through Filed

Roughly three quarters of the firm's individual book went through Filed in their first season, January to July 2026.

Same day

Prep turnaround

Final documents used to sit untouched for 10 days. This season, a K-1 uploaded in the morning was through prep before lunch.

26 min

Median prep time

The median return took 26 minutes to prepare, and the fastest took six.

1

System failure in six months

480 completed runs with a single system failure. Nearly every stop along the way was a validation check doing its job.

looking ahead

One upload, start to finish.

Part of why the first season worked is that there was no first-season project. Delta Wealth already ran client intake through Truss, and Truss connects to Filed out of the box, so switching on AI prep didn't mean an integration build or a new portal for clients to learn. Clients kept uploading documents to Truss the way they always had.

From that single upload, Filed prepared the return, built the workpaper, and ran the AI review, with Truss keeping the client side organized the whole way. Six weeks into the season, Dino already had his verdict:

I think it's been really positive. I mean, this whole experience, it's crazy how much in a year things have changed.
